Laughing at myself:
Required medicine for
getting through each day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I’m new at this blogging stuff. I have wanted to write for a while, even started writing essays before I had a venue to publish. And so with some trepidation and a lot of excitement, I started this blog. On December 19th at 10pm-ish, I announced to my friends and family that I had a blog, please visit, blah blah blah.
And then I became enamored with “site stats”. This is a fun aspect of Word Press where you can see the number of blog views, comments, external links and so forth. On that first evening, December 19, I watched as the number of views climbed 10, 15, 20, 30. I went to bed having found the Android Word Press app and joyful in my 36 views that day. The next morning, before I left the bed (yes, before I even pee’d) I pulled up the app to see my views. Already had 10 that morning, December 20th. Wow! People were reading my stuff! How cool was that.
It was on that seemingly quiet December 20 that my addiction to site stats came into full bloom. I watched all day. I would ask Frank “Guess what?” and he dutifully replied “What?” knowing exactly what I was about to say… still, he paused to hear me recite the latest number of views… 39 (“more than yesterday!), 48, 57, 65, 76!! I was ecstatic. I was hooked.
More than hooked, I became a junkie. And the hard part for a junkie? When the buzz wears off and there’s no more juice. So December 20 ended with 102 views. And December 21 came in with its cooling breeze. 38 views. Worse yet, December 22: 11 views. After that, double digits weren’t frequent. I was a failure. No one liked my stuff enough to return. How could I go on.
Now, just like “pretty is on the inside”, I know that writing a blog isn’t about the number of views you get, it is about writing for the fun of it, taking the chance, livin’ the dream. Yeah yeah yeah. These stats were cold hard facts that I couldn’t deny. Worse yet, my ongoing failure kept showing itself to me in the “views timeline bar chart” Word Press provides – a visual of the number of views each day in your history.
And guess what the bar chart shows now? Well, it shows my blog giving me the finger.
Yes, every time I go to the stats page, until enough days have elapsed that this view of December 19/20/21 goes off the page, I have to see my blog flipping me off. Well har-de-har-har.
So today, when talking with my friend Sandra (who gave me the title for this post) I decided to see the humor and humility in this circumstance (both words derived from the Latin “hum” meaning laugh at self and get over it). Site stats be damned. I welcome the Word Press finger. It will remind me of what is possible and compel me to post more often and perhaps get more friends who will read me more than once.
/ January 1, 2012Well, first, I have to admit than when I read the blog about the 45’s, I thought you were just sharing an interesting blog you had stumbled upon. I’m a little slow on the uptake– but still, loved the read. Now that I’ve figured out this is you, I plan to bookmark and return often. Love your “voice” – been a big fan since the “one-antlered moose” days! :). Way to go – keep up the great writing!
Family Haikus
/ January 1, 2012Thanks Leigh! Appreciate it!
/ January 7, 2012I know exactly how you feel! I even uploaded sitemeter so I can track what parts of the world my visitors are from. It is addicting!
/ January 13, 2012LOL Rob I thought the same thing. Now he will have a small hand giving him the finger and a hand with a REALLY long finger! 🙂 What a fun post and so hits home for all of us who have been writing for so long hoping to get on the Freshly Pressed page or to see those site stats jump ONLY b/c people like to read what you are wirting AND not b/c of being on the WordPress slpash page (although I admit I am awaiting my turn with great anticipation, which in my world had not died yet!) Stats are addicting to watch and will bring out the Grief Reflex in us as we watch the rollercoaster. Writing is the reward and people reading it is the soft, fluffy coating that makes us think we are in heaven. Great post enjoy having two statistical hand to help you out with your future posts! Haha! AmberLena
/ January 9, 2012LOL! I’m laughing with tears in my eyes as I’m reading. I literally just started bloggin on Dec 24th – Christmas EVE myself! I know exactly how you feel! haha Isn’t the WordPress community fantastic! I also feel like I joined the most amazing “Positive feedback” club so far… haha you cracked me UP! Thanks for sharing… “my blog is giving me the finger”… hahaha classic!
Mikalee Byerman
/ January 9, 2012Well your blog may have given you the finger, but the mysterious Freshly Pressed gods just invited you to the promised land of site stat viewing fun.
Enjoy the ride. Something tells me that “finger” will soon be a mere speck on the site stat landscape…
🙂
(and BTW, we’re all crazy in our own little ways about site stats. I’m obsessed with tracking subscriptions, keeping a daily count on my calendar and trying to evince reasons for patterns. Someday I’ll be discovered rocking in the fetal position of my home office, babbling about page views…)
Awakening
/ January 9, 2012There were times when I lived and died by that little graph. I get four tons views and I’m on Cloud Nine! I get only casual glances and I have a dark cloud hanging over my head. It took a little while to realize that as long as even ONE person is looking….that’s all that matters. Like it? Love it? Hate it? Loathe it? Who cares? Just read!
/ January 9, 2012I expect being Freshly Pressed will turn the tables on your low views 😛
I’m the same – I obsessively check my stats, post links to entries on Facebook and Twitter, check my stats, again, work out where the views are coming from and then spam up all my other social media with links and more links.
The situation is bad.
In fact, guess what I was about to do when I came on to WordPress and ended up finding your post on Freshly Pressed? That’s right, I was about to check my stats.
/ January 9, 2012I love the post! I am also a site stats junkie. I was tickled about my all time high of 17 views in one day but I would have been over the mooon with 38 views! Count your blessings!
/ January 9, 2012This is the first time I have ever plugged my own writing on someone else’s blog but I wrote this piece particularly for people dealing with WPSD (wordpress stat addiction) http://patricemj.wordpress.com/2011/12/17/raspberry-sculls-and-bloody-scones/
If it makes you feel any better I had pretty much zero visits for my first 4 or 5 monthys.
/ January 9, 2012This is exactly telling my story! So funny. I started writing blogs around the same time as you, mid december. More like an online journal, I thought to myself. Yeah, who was I kidding!!! Got hooked when the stats showed around 86 views, and the next day….maybe 10! Then I felt like I had to write another one so people would read and my stat ‘will give me the finger’ as you say! Now I am a prolific writer….of nothing of substance. Fluff! But still loving it! Awesome. Congrats on being freshly pressed.
/ January 9, 2012Ha! I loved the post, and just wait until you see your site stats after enjoying a moment in the spotlight – congratulations my friend, you have been Freshly Pressed, and now your blog finger will haunt you for a long, long time after today’s traffic. Enjoy it, and thanks for a nice read that every blogger can relate to.
/ January 9, 2012I think your stats will have more to say to you after today! Loved the post – the stats giving you the finger is hilarious, and you’re not the only one who loves clicking on site stats… 😉
Congrats on being freshly pressed!
/ January 9, 2012Hello “FamilyHaikus” (wish you had chosen a more ‘personal’ name):
I have noticed – as you will see proven by the big stats you’ll get on this, your new post today – that “Freshly Pressed” attracts strictly blogs that, in my career in news journalism, we called “Lites & Brites.” Examples: cutesy puppies and kittens, pretty photography, humour, fluff, travel stories [happy travel only – ie. nothing about trouble spots like Egypt, Syria, Libya]; cooking & favorite recipes, “celebration” stories (birthdays, anniversaries, parties, etc.); Mom & Pop family stories; cute/smart/comical kids, etc. etc.
This is my one and only complaint about WordPress as a blogging platform. I consider it a serious weakness. I for one “follow” serious, hard-hitting blogs, while “giving the finger” to all the Lites & Brites, which annoy me and waste my time. I can read the Sunday Funnies in the paper if I need to smile.
I do understand WordPress’ editorial policy of serving up only gloppy sweetness for “Freshly Pressed.” It’s the “safe” choice, but it’s lazy and condescending. I’d rather be unsafe and get some really meaty reading. These are troubled times we’re living in – we all need to do some serious thinking. (Are you listening, WordPress?)
Anyway, you’ve hit the big time today, baby!
“Keep it dumbed-down out there, people!”
/ January 10, 2012I can understand where you are coming from, I often like to see the nice juicy blogs that make me think and give me yet another way to waste my time.
/ January 10, 2012Will, I actually wrote two posts on Egypt that were Freshly Pressed, one last January and the other just a couple of weeks ago during a recent trip on the amazing graffiti that is coming out of Tahrir Square. Also my friend Max wrote a great piece on Egypt that was freshly pressed and we both were highlighted for covering top stories. Disclaimer, my piece was not a journalistic piece but a personal account from my daughter so…. But to your point , quick and entertaining reads seem to get the most attention.
To Family Haikus – congratulations – this was funny and I think most of us can relate with the stats obsession if we’re honest!
/ January 9, 2012Loved the post! LOL… I’ve been writing for over two years now and have NEVER had enough views to ever get the finger. That’s okay by me, my subject matter probably doesn’t interest anyone else…
/ January 9, 2012I too – like everyone else on wordpress have a slight obsession with checking my stats. When I have more then 10 I jump for joy! I always wondered how you can get Freshly pressed!!?? Any ideas??
I loved this blog and will be following from now on! Have a great week!
/ January 9, 2012What a great blog, and congratulatons on being Freshly Pressed! How exciting! I also started my blog back in October and have only recently been getting up the courage to share it with more and more people. Keep on having fun writing! I’ve enjoyed it so far!
/ January 9, 2012Love your post! I bet the views will pour in, especially after being Freshly Pressed!
I agree with the being hooked to stats part! The craziest thing is some of my posts which I wasn’t too happy about get more views than the ones I am proud of…
My new year non-resolution is to make sure I dont get too obsessed with it!
Will
/ January 9, 2012…and did I mention?…….
How annoying “Congrats on being freshly pressed!” is?
Reminds me of that required “Dr. Laura Schlesinger” greeting: “I am my kids’ mom.” Mindless group-speak.
Or of 1939 German society, with that “required” ‘Heil H—-‘ thing!
/ January 9, 2012I feel ya on being obsessed about blog stats. That is the first thing I look at when I log onto my dashboard. I started my blog in November, and I did what you did–I told my friends and family that I started a blog, please read. I even posted a link on Facebook. I had 6 hits then it bounced to only 23 hits. I thought I would never find an audience LOL.
Now, my hits are growing steadily. It’s still a learning process though. The posts I think will be very entertaining and will receive comments, gets nothing. And, the posts I think will be hardly viewed, are the ones who get the most comments and popular status on my dashboard.
I found when I started looking at other people’s blogs and leaving comments, then my hits started growing more frequently. And, now I see a lot of hits from search engines WOO HOO!!!
Good luck on finding readership so your chart doesn’t keep giving you the finger LOL.
Keep smiling,
Yawatta
/ January 9, 2012Normally I am 99.9 percent positive on Freshly Pressed selections, I find this one without real merit, and quite frankly, offensive. Hopefully the comment selections of these Freshly Pressed selections will not become a sheep herders location….meaning everyone, always have something positive to say, in order to get a plug for their own WordPress sites. To assume whom ever is selected to make these selections is in tune with the majority, in terms of similar points of view, is an administrative misjudgement on the part of the WordPress administrators. It is my hope this blog will not represent a continuing trend with WordPress in the selection process.
/ January 9, 2012I appreciate the opinion. I’m as surprised as you are that I got picked. (Wait, I’m surprised, you’re disappointed, but close enough). Thanks for taking the time to post.
/ January 9, 2012Dude, didn’t your mother ever teach you if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all? Also, you might want to review your posts before sending them if you expect any of us to take you seriously.
John J. Rigo, Texas' Poet
/ January 9, 2012My mom would have called that being a “Weeie.” Guess that works better for the gals, than for the men. Haven’t you ever watch “Housewifes” or “Mafia gals? These gals tell it like it is! Is that being “nice thing,” part of the sheep mentality? Since I will be turning 70 next month, I think you will need to gain a few years on you, before you are qualified to judge me “Ms. Judges You.”
John J. Rigo, Texas' Poet
/ January 9, 2012P.S. You might be right about being careful about what I post on my blog site as well. I generally did not pay much attention to the poems I write and post on my blog. Oh…by the way, my site just hit 20,003 hits! How is yours doing?
/ January 9, 2012Thank you to everyone who has read, written and explored. This is very exciting… Was in a meeting at work when I noticed I had 30, then 40, unread personal emails, all from WordPress… Huh? Then I figured it out. That had to be the longest 2 hour meeting in history, waiting to get out of it and check on line (note to my manager, I’m on a break right now). I can’t stop smiling!
Getting Freshly Pressed definitely lets you see the possibilities . . . your stats will be giving you the finger much more often. 🙂 It happened to me back in August and it was such an exciting day! I had to teach a class before I got to check my e-mail. Time never moved so slowly!!
Congrats on getting FP’d
/ January 9, 2012Your post just tickled me to death. I also started not one, but two blogs in December. First time ever. I think we need a 12-step program for stat junkies. I am also addicted. I’ll be your stats are off the chart today!
/ January 9, 2012A great read. I felt the exact same initially. It is really addictive.Glad it’s not just me that does that
Thomas
/ January 9, 2012I for one find this situation very funny and ironic because now your site stats are probably blowing up… congratulations! I know at first how addicting they are, and for some, they stay addicting – but for me, I really care more about how many comments or followers I get because that shows people care about what I’m writing as opposed to just looking at it and moving on.
Good luck with your blog, it’s great! (:
belovedmusephotography
/ January 9, 2012How did you become a mind reader? I was just chastising myself for not being realistic about the success of my blog after such a short period of time. And then you had to go prove my expectations completely wrong by getting freshly pressed and getting immediate positive feedback! Congrats and best of luck!
Hope I’m not helping to give you the finger.
But if you’re going to leave negative feedback criticizing this blog, or any other blog for that matter, for being Freshly Pressed I WILL be giving you the finger. Jealousy is ugly.
/ January 9, 2012This post made me roll with laughter!! If you asked my husband, he would tell you that I too am insanely obsessed with my ‘site stats’ It’s blog crack! I had a day of 691 views (which made me nearly fall out of my chair) and I have finally realized that I must just breath, let go and keep blogging on because I don’t know that I could ever repeat that.
Of course one obsession must be replaced by another, and every day I hope beyond all hopes I too made it to the Freshly Pressed spotlight as you have. Congrats! And I will try not to be too green with envy. Now how many views have I had now….
jamieahughes
/ January 9, 2012Huzzah for you! Keep writing! And now you’re Freshly Pressed, so I can only imagine how big your finger is going to be after today! You may crash and burn after this. Thanks for a humorous and realistic post. I truly enjoyed it.
/ January 9, 2012That’s a great post. I have had the exact same experience. I get such a thrill on a good day and such a sense of disappointment the next day when it’s the regular 30 hits! Today is a good day so I’m going to have a big finger sticking up at me for a while!
Writing is the fun part, but checking the site stats is the icing on the cake.
Congratulations on making freshly pressed! You’ll have way more views now!
/ January 9, 2012So…. you become a junkie tot stats, and then start to wean off of them, only to have WordPress become an enabler and give you some of the drug back. Now your blog is going to be really flipping you off. Really good WordPress. Maybe I should become a junkie too. (Oh, wait, already am and mostly recovered. Nevermind. 🙂 )
What’s really depressing is that my one blog (One Day in Words) has the highest day rated at 30–something, but the best i can figure, it’s all spam views.
/ January 9, 2012I recently spent a whole day (seriously, 10 straight hours) at my desk side by side with good friend annascafe, both switching from our wordpress blogs, to twitter, to facebook and back again, barely speaking to each other except to cry out delightedly when there was new wordpress activity. It was completely unhealthy, but way too fun! And we both pretended that we’d had such a productive day (it was work right?!) and felt so proud of ourselves for being so motivated. As if it had been remotely within our control.
Rehab calls. Till then, thank you for obsessively checking your stats. It makes the rest of us feel less crazy.
Sarah
And oh did you know that 4 people found us via google today?! With such strange searches. If you give me a minute, I’ll read them out to you and we can try and decipher what they were really searching for to see if we can replicate similar trends with our tags in the future…?
Lacey
/ January 9, 2012I understand completely. I, too, obsessively check my stats; it has become quite a problem. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed… I’m sure it will help with your situation. 🙂
I’m so glad I found you- your blog is very entertaining. Exactly the kind of writing I love. I will definitely be following you.
annsangels
/ January 9, 2012LOVE your post, as a new ‘blogger’ (if that’s the correct term) it makes me feel better about my addiction to checking the stats 🙂 Thanks for letting me know it’s more normal than OCD x
journeyofjordannaeast
/ January 9, 2012I just joined WordPress less than a week ago to chart my progress in writing a crime novel. Anyway, I also am completely addicted to the Site Stats portion of the WordPress app. I check it every few hours after a new post is written. Haha! Nice to know I’m not the only one obsessing. Happy blogging!
tennizzlle
/ January 9, 2012I am exactly the same – a sit stats junkie! Great you got on Freshly Pressed and a fantastic post!
tennizzlle
/ January 9, 2012Make that site stats, not sit stats 🙂
I Made You A Mixtape
/ January 9, 2012First of all, welcome to the world of blogging, and second of all- huge congrats to being on FP!! You are onto a good thing here…. :o)
Nicole
/ January 9, 2012I feel you there! My first few days of having a blog are still the ones with the most views! I’ve found that the only way to get my readership to improve really is to write about food. Unfortunately (as my food blogs suggest) I am not much of a cook… Here’s to single-digit blog views!
/ January 9, 2012The humor is in the simplicity. You had a good start, and (as others have said) I’m sure the publicity will help. Of course, having a sense of humore does too. Very funny!
babelclaire
/ January 9, 2012Guess your stats are goong crazy now! I’m pretty obsessed with mine too!
/ January 9, 2012Hahaha I lol’d! congrats on being freshly pressed!
/ January 9, 2012How funny! I’m so glad I’m not the only one with an awkward Stats obsession! Thank you for helping me feel alittle more normal! 🙂
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
/ January 9, 2012I find myself stalking my stats sometimes too. But I just have to remember to just have fun writing, no matter who reads!
/ January 9, 2012But not much….
/ January 9, 2012Oh goodness, been there/done that!
Confession: I’m a WordPress Stats junkie myself… I’ll sit here with my coffee and just hit refresh. Yikes!
But you nailed it, it’s not about the numbers, it’s about having a creative outlet to express yourself.
Excellent post and *cough cough relate able cough cough*
/ January 9, 2012well done, so now receiving a finger isnt that bad after all =)
/ January 9, 2012I’m new to this blogging stuff too, thought I’d try it out, see if I liked it etc, you hit it right on the head here, I went through the same thought process!! Haha, good luck to you with your blog though 🙂
/ January 9, 2012I have the same problem on mine. I wish I was freshly pressed to solve my dilemma
/ January 9, 2012See how frigid the next cooling breeze feels after being freshly pressed! 🙂
Oh, what a let-down. (Been there, done that) But keep blogging, my friend. You have the way with the words.
/ January 9, 2012I feel your pain in regard to being a view stats junkie.
Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed; you can turn around and give your stats board a big finger right back now.
/ January 9, 2012yay!!! glad to note I am not the only stats obssessive in town!! 🙂 but you captured it beautifully and I delight in your observation….my stats give me the finger too! 🙂 Welcome to the world of blogging, long may it last. I am going to subscribe so I can keep up with your observations, I love humour. thanks for a chuckle. have a great day
/ January 9, 2012Awe you gave me a laugh, and laughter is the best medicine! Personally I love the light and bright! Focusing on the positive will get you much farther in life than putting down others, or focusing on life’s troubles! Focusing on life’s troubles will only get you more of life’s troubles! Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
Awe, as an artist you are trained to take the critique, but you also have to learn when the Critique is a real critique or just jealousy or plain old meanness! I celebrate with you, and am sad for those who under the guise of critique are rude and mean.
I tip my hat to you my friend, and may your blogs fingers get taller and taller everyday!
Peace be with you, keep up the writing!
Sallyjane
http://www.the777man.com Do you love to write? We are having a Murder Mystery contest on our blog, and the books proceeds will be given to charity. Contestants write the chapters, and readers vote. Come join in the fun!
/ January 9, 2012Is there a support group for this site-stat stuff? I can’t seem to shake the demon, either!
Congrats on your fresh presh status – I’m sure that got you a solid fix. 😉
jessica minghinelli
/ January 9, 2012This is funny! We’re all a little obsessed about site stats, why would we write otherwise? Yes, the fun of it, blah, blah, blah, we write to be read. 🙂
Paprika Furstenburg
/ January 9, 2012Wait until you see what happens to your stats now that you’ve been Freshly Pressed! Congratulations.
joahnadiyosa
/ January 9, 2012hahaha! Same sentiment here. I have grown too wary about my site stats every now and then. Everyday, every single day, the first thing I check with this WP account is how many stats I have gained the day before and worst, every single hour that passes, I would check if somebody actually cares to browse through my blog. But then i say: “What the hell?!” While I would really love to to have many, many traffic views, I try to tell myself that this blog is about me, about expressing my views and giving my thoughts a life on my page. Anyways, congrats on being FP’d. Totally hilarious! 🙂
/ January 9, 2012This is a very common thing on YouTube too, where I came from before this. Some people are obsessed with view numbers and try every trick in the book to get more views on their videos including but not limited to paying people to view their videos. They actually have companies that you can hire to get people to view your videos. There are also a lot of fake subscribers that go trolling around subscribing to everyone’s YouTube channel just so that person might subscribe back. I think it is kind of silly because what I want is real followers who actually like my stuff and vice versa. There’s also the SPAM subscribers who basically just set up an account to SPAM their products by following people.
Just Me With . . .
/ January 9, 2012I enjoyed the post and the fact that you are now FP, well, I’m enjoying your ride, vicariously. I’ve had to remind myself on occasion that checking stats does not help to gain readers. But sometimes, it’s just plain fun. I guess it’s my “Angry Birds.” Anyway, good luck. By the way, I think it’s wonderful that your stats were so high in your first few days. That’s a great start. Enjoy!!!
onelifethislife
/ January 9, 2012Congrats on being Freshly Pressed! Well deserved! I am new myself and going throgh it too. I think for the most part, we all get the finger. What’s important is that there is a finger and if you’re lucky it will be a really long finger! Keep it coming!
/ January 9, 2012Congrats for bring freshly pressed … 😉
Hope my blog gives me a finger too.. nyahaha
/ January 9, 2012Hahaha… Mine shows “L” for loser 😛 😛 …. Same case… I see, wow, some big bars.. then I see the number on the scale… 5 is the maximum… 😀
/ January 9, 2012i had another wordpress blog that i permanently deleted about two years ago. this blog is new, but the fact that it doesn’t get as many views as my old one drives me nuts! whatever you do, don’t delete your blog. you will regret it forever. and then your hard drive will crash and you will lose whatever saved writing samples you had.
TheBourneBlogger
/ January 9, 2012Oh, the evil delights our stats pages plague us with!
I hit 50 today, and promptly ran around the house dancing and screaming and hi-fiving anyone within my immediate personal space bubble!
Love the blog!
angelaschaffer
/ January 9, 2012Ah, I remember being obsessed with site stats on my old personal blog. The first thing I did when I logged on to WP in the morning was to look at my stats to see how much people loved (or hated) me. And then I became involved in the Post A Day project last year and went nuts trying to think of new content to post every. single. day. I burned out within weeks lol.
I’d run into the front room and say “OMG, 100 people looked at my blog today!” And then I’d get depressed the next day when I the bounce rate was about 5x higher than views on the “awesome” post I had just published.
That’s another thing, thinking “oh boy, someone’s reading my blog….” only to find out that they took a quick glance at the home page and left rather than clicking on any of the posts.
I’m trying very hard to get off the stats crack with the new blog I launched yesterday, but rehab is tough.
Corz Galore
/ January 9, 2012My blog does that to me all the time. But I felt the same way with the Site Stats. It was crazy fun, but then I got a bit frustrated.
itsthearrow
/ January 9, 2012I feel left out. I want the finger!
Dinny Rex
/ January 9, 2012I completely understand your addiction. But you’re lucky. I’m that person who goes to my brother and gets in his face and says, “Guess what? Guess what? I got 6 views today!”
Because of this lack of views, double digits make me so happy it fuels me for the rest of the week.
bradleez
/ January 9, 2012Nice! I’m so too trying not to get stuck in stats! Looks like you put it out there, you said be damned with the stats and now look! Good for you! Happy family and blogging adventures!
life is a bowl of kibble
/ January 9, 2012Oh my gosh I love this. I see this same digit every week it starts with Sunday then moves into Monday then back down again on Tuesdays. Can you guess I post on Mondays?? Now that you have been Pressed I doubt your numbers will be going down soon. 🙂 Enjoy
Riazi Snaps
/ January 9, 2012you captured well the dangers of blogging–site stat addiction! Hilarious post. I can promise you I’ll be back at least once more to read a future post:P
seekingmonsieur
/ January 9, 2012Thank you, thank you! I needed your story to get me through my depression of not getting enough “fingers” on my site. And yet, I keep writing and writing and…
You made me smile and realize that the numbers really don’t matter (or does it?) but knowing that you are publishing the best work that is in you.
/ January 9, 2012The things that catch your eye!
I caught “My blog is Giving Me The Finger” out of the corner of my eye.
It was hilarious, and oh-so-true. Thanks for the humor.
/ January 9, 2012OMG, so i’m not the only who’s frantic about the site stats. ahahaha! anyway…congrats for the Freshly Pressed! it surely gives gives you tons of viewers 🙂
Maryanne Pale
/ January 9, 2012Haha! I enjoyed reading this post. I’m very new to this blogging site (this is my 4th day since I’ve joined up) so thanks to you I am now aware of the gradual addiction that will eventuate with the site stats lol!
Huffygirl
/ January 9, 2012Maureen, looks like your blog will be giving you the finger again now that you’re FP’d. Quite impressive I must say, after only 2 months of blogging- good for you.
and a little secret – we’re all obsessed with our stats, It’s the blogging equivalent of “You like me, you really like me.”
Congrats from Huffygirl.
Sam Watson
/ January 9, 2012My blog gives me the finger constantly. After tracking my stats for a long time, I can almost guess with my eyes closed how many views I will get on any given day. It’s not as much as I would like, but its fairly consistent. I just don’t like it when there are zero views, it makes me a sad wolf.
Anyways, thanks for the post, quite entertaining!
La Oreja D VanGogh
/ January 9, 2012Funny, i also love checking m stats and seeing if anyone has read my post. It is quite addicting am my sitestat has giving me the finger a couple of times in the year I have it. Sometime I wonder how can I in one month have 300 + views and then every other month averaging 20-30 thats counting the familia that I make go on my site.
Danielle Harris
/ January 9, 2012I feel the same way. I’ve had a high in the 500s. And a low in the teens. But you have to go back to why do we write? We write for ourselves. Because we must. If the writing is more addicting than the stats, then you’re a writer:)
shenanitim
/ January 9, 2012It’s nice to know I’m not the only one obsessed. Though my buddy, an actual online editor, pointed out to me that he doesn’t ever look at the stats, ‘cuz he’s “too busy creating new content.”
Which is what I remind myself whenever I catch myself clicking the bars a little too often…
blackbyrd
/ January 9, 2012Now you have me noticing that my blog flips me off on occasion, too. (But with probably less views than you have.)
You opened my eyes
to see that my blog is not
/ January 9, 2012When life gives me the finger, I make fingeraid. It doesn’t taste very good, and it requires quite a bit of sugar to make it palatable, but once you taste it you’ll be glad I made you confused to finish the rest of this sentence. Brussel Sprouts.
/ January 9, 2012It must be very exciting getting all these comments! Congratulations! I, too, check those stats every day and I’ve been blogging for 2 1/2 years. Yep, I’m a blogging junkie, too. Like you, I tell myself I shouldn’t be obsessed with the number of hits I get, but with the quality of my blog. This translates to nobody’s reading my blog. Actually quite a few people are. Over this whole time, I’m almost up to 38,000 hits. I don’t even know if this is impressive or not. But I love my blog and keep hoping that more people will discover it. Best of luck to you!
/ January 9, 2012Hahah! Your phone is probably exploding now ;D Hope you enjoy being Freshly Pressed! I loved this entry.
/ January 9, 2012Just a heads-up: My blog was on Freshly Pressed back in July (This is the post that was featured: http://wp.me/pFs3T-19p), and the spike in views was amazingly cool — but then the crash afterward was quite sobering. Ouch! I got a lot of extra looks for a few days following, but then viewing figures returned to more… uh, normal levels. I watched the stats day after day, but they never approached those epic levels again. It’s something of a tease, but hey, it’s also really fun. Enjoy it!
andydbrown
/ January 9, 2012Congrats! Way to turn around a funny situation to write about it brilliantly and BAM – to be freshly pressed as a result! I didn’t get freshly pressed till 3 years after starting my blog but ever since I was, the stats have been 1000 hits and over each day. Once your blog gets picked up in the search engines (which takes time!), you’ll see the numbers skyrocket. I’m surprised by some of the negative comments that you were gracious enough to post. You total deserve being freshly pressed. Thanks for making me laugh first thing in the morning at my office desk! 🙂
Emma
/ January 9, 2012I know how you feel. As a first time blogger, I check my stats probably a little too much. My material is important to me and I guess I just like to be reassured that it is important to other people too. Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!
C
/ January 9, 2012DONT WORRY. this freshly pressed one will make up for it. pulling your avg way high! congrats 🙂
/ January 10, 2012I love this image…My blog seems to give me the finger daily…I am addicted to stats…My friends say I have sold out, that it is all I seem to care about…But honestly, I blog becuase I love to write….You image you posted today is fantastic…Good luck on your blog journey!!
/ January 10, 2012Love this post! This is exactly how I felt when I started blogging, and still feel sometimes now. I do not get to blog as much as I use to because I do not have a lot of time to put into what I want to. So, recently I have just been doing updates, which helps my stats give me “the middle finger” :c) Keep blogging I can’t wait to keep reading!
LUGS
/ January 10, 2012same, same,,, i check my sitestats first before anything else,, if i get nothing,,c’est la vie,, if i get 1 or 2, that’s fine,, if it’s more than that, i am happy, if it gives me the finger,, wellll,,, that would be fantastic,,,haha.. have fun!!
/ January 10, 2012thank you for this funny post. I started my day with a smile on my face due to this post of yours. I am also new to blogging, just like you; so i can really get connected with this post. Best wishes for your blog, now you have lots more readers. So enjoy the moment. 🙂
The Background Story
/ January 10, 2012It will remind me of what is possible and compel me to post more often and perhaps get more friends who will read me more than once.
And look where it got you … Freshly Pressed! 🙂
I’m a stats junkie, too. When it got so bad at one point, I didn’t log in for a while (which was a mere eight hours hahaha).
bladenomics
/ January 10, 2012Yes the site stats do hook us up..I look it regularly like as if I m watching the stock market. 😛 But now you’re stats would have skyrocketed ! Kudos on being FP!!
/ January 10, 2012I know the feeling : I am sickeningly not interesting!
I’m always in awe of those blog sites that have fantastic viewing numbers and have the bragging right to put up the counter on their page for everybody to see.
Ahhh…I wish I have that consistently!
/ January 10, 2012I think you’re about to get another finger…haha, the more the better i guess, right??
/ January 10, 2012Got to admit the title catch phrase got my attention and good to see more than one person has this problem. Congrats for getting Freshly Pressed, hope to be seeing more of you in that page. Just added you on my links page on my blog https://inkgypsys.wordpress.com. Keep up good work, I’ll be staying in tuned! 🙂
/ January 10, 2012I’ve bookmarked you. I’ve got a different whip pushing my need for hits – as a new author I’m required to blog one post a day for the week’s run up to publication, ‘internet presence’ and all.
Glad to see your light take on it all. I think I’ve found a new hero!
John J. Rigo, Texas' Poet
/ January 10, 2012It use to trouble me to see a lack of activity on my WordPress blog site. I then had the thought, “Suppose my poetry work somehow saves but one life from deep depression, truly then, it was worth all the effort.”
/ January 10, 2012when i first started my blog i was hoked on my site stats. i would check them 5 times a day ( i did have a life :P) and my high point was 33 views . from them i have been lucky to get 2 views a day . so best to ignore 😛
/ January 10, 2012Hilarity. This is awesome, better for the fact that you’re now freshly pressed! Congrats!
/ January 10, 2012I’ve never been Freshly Pressed, but I have my own similar story. The finger is there now, taunting me, because a few weeks ago I wrote a post praising the BBC’s children’s channel, CBeebies. Somewhere along the line, the link to this post got Tweeted by a couple of the channel’s presenters, and bang, my stats go through the roof. They’re back to normal now, but wait – the scale has changed and so it looks like my blog is flatlining. It’s not, but that’s the curse of the stats page…
Melanie
/ January 10, 2012I can definitely relate to this post, especially in my earlier blog writing days. You’re right: the purpose for writing needs to be the writing itself. At the same time, however, it’s nice to feel that the words you’ve so carefully selected aren’t echoing out into an abyss. Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!
misspinkles
/ January 10, 2012Hahaha that was a really great read.
I totally understand what you mean, site stats can be compared to crack, seriously. HAHAHA
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed, your stats are on steroids atm 😉
/ January 10, 2012Well, looks like you’re back in the site stat saddle again! I loved this post because it reminds me of my own trials and tribulations of querying for my novel. You’ll get a lot of interest to start, then in one fell swoop, everyone has disappeared.
Thanks for making me chuckle today.
charlieleake
/ January 10, 2012Hey FamilyHaikus – great blog.
How about an update on your hits to date since being Freshly Pressed?
Mark
/ January 10, 2012I got freshly pressed myself last year and like you was ticking along with a handful of visits per day when suddenly BANG!
I think I hit 1900 visits on the first day and my inbox was overflowing with comments.
I think that affect lasted for 3 days and then I dropped off the front screen and the hits dropped again.
It did however mean that the graph for the month just looked crazy with 3 days of big numbers and the rest of the month with hardly enough visits to register at all.
Well done.
jennw2ns
/ January 10, 2012Sheesh–and you got freshly pressed, too! I’ve been on WordPress for a year and haven’t had that good fortune. But congratulations–sincerely–because this is a well-written post and I COMPLETELY resonate.
I got engaged in December and broke my record of 105 views in one day with 226 or something that day. Today I’ve had 3. I’m not even sure that counts as a finger . . . but as you say, eventually that crazy-stat day will disappear from my page . . .
Funny! 🙂
/ January 10, 2012Congratulations on getting freshly pressed!! I just started my blog a couple of days ago, and wow! are those stats addicting! I check it twice before I go to bed, once when I wake up and twice at lunch time. Talk about addicting. I’m a long away from having freshly pressed success, though, haha. But CONGRATULATIONS again!:)
manpos
/ January 10, 2012I feel your pain. I think wordpress should disable the stats until you get to a certain daily average, as looking at that pathetic bar chart is killing me! Well done on getting pressed though, that should certainly help!
creativeconfessions
/ January 10, 2012Well, now that you’re on Freshly Pressed you can enjoy happier blog stats…and your blog must be giving you an exceptionally long finger for today! 😛 Congratz!
jozsaykirostky
/ January 10, 2012I watch my stats and see zero views. I started my blog as an experiment in whether by telling noone that you exist will you be discovered. So yeah if a tree falls in the woods, what sound does it make? How’d you manage a freshly pressed?
A Frog at Large
/ January 10, 2012Congratulations! You’ve been blogging for two weeks and you get Freshly Pressed? I suspect it’s not just the blog that’s giving you the finger right now 😀
I got excited because I just posted something and had two comments straight away – well, two pingbacks to other posts of mine anyway, it’s not quite the same…
/ January 10, 2012I love this post! It helped me laugh at myself too. I just started my blog on New Year’s Eve and found myself sucked into the Site Stats page as well… checking it on my iPhone every 15 minutes at times! It is nice to be reminded of why we are really doing this. Of course it is still exciting to be on Freshly Pressed and see those stats rise! Congratulations!
/ January 10, 2012Keep it up! mate! I just started my blog just for the sake of writing. I alswo like the statics, but my objective is to write one story a day for the 366 days this year will bring. It is something like a new year resolution. I know that not many readers will have the push to reaqd me everyday, but I do not really care…
I´ll see you arond and just keep having fun writing, you make me happy reading this blog! Thank you…
/ January 10, 2012I use to feel the exact same way and became overly obsessed about my blog. I had to remove myself from the stats b/c my focus became just those stats and not the content…I am glad you made it on Freshly Pressed…get it girl!
/ January 10, 2012Lol. I thought I had a problem when I keep on coming back only to realize my stat is not going higher.. But after reading this post and everyone’s respond, I feel so much better.. Site stat go to hell. Write with a smile, and visit heaven with me, lol.
btw, congrats on being Freshly Pressed! 🙂 I hope my time will come.. someday. ^^
/ January 10, 2012You are so in trouble now! Getting on Freshly Pressed is the biggest buzz EVER! You will be so pumped by your incredible “finger” that you will want this for the rest of your blogging life. (But you write in such a funny wonderful way, that I’m sure you’ll get a wonderful following who will stay with you through the tides of blogging, up and down, up and down.)
/ January 10, 2012Thank you so much for posting this! I too was thinking I was a failure because I was addicted to my site stats. I began my blog on Dec 14 and had a “high” day about a week and a half later with 69 views (I thought that was low). A friend encouraged me to share it with all of my friends, so finally I did (little nervous sharing with people close). 140 views! 11 followers and all kinds of encouragement. Then the dropoff back to 30-40 a day, then the drop off… failure I thought. I stopped posting. Now I see mine are actually ABOVE average, thanks for letting me know! I think I’ll write today!
/ January 10, 2012I love this. I get the finger in stats all the time. You did get freshly pressed. That will be a boost. I do the weekly photo challenge on WordPress. I visit everyone on the whole list who joins it. I leave a comment on every one. Sometimes 100 or 200 blogs. I am lucky to get 20 comments back. People love comments, but they don’t like to give them out. I have found some good blogs though.
/ January 10, 2012I had (and still have, I think) the exact same blog stats addiction. The Internet is amazing in that it can show you the true reach you have as a writer, in a way that print publications simply can’t match. I wish you the best of luck as a blogger, although by the looks of the reader response to this post, you will have no trouble succeeding!
/ January 10, 2012You got a high spike in views? Lucky dude…
/ January 10, 2012This is too funny! Thanks for the laugh, and yes, now I will always think of you when looking at my stats!
/ January 10, 2012I loved your post!! Congratulations on being Freshly Pressed!! Your post has just echoed the thoughts of all bloggers. I just started blogging (again, because I’m still adjusting to the move from pen and paper), and every time I see my stats go up even by 1, I really want to break out into song and dance 😉 Do continue writing. I’m sure your stats will change from giving you the finger, to giving you a high five 🙂 Can’t wait to read more from you!
Harold
/ January 10, 2012Well you hit it big on this one! Wondering like others what happens to numbers after this? I had a high of 94 though now WP says 83 wonder what happened there, hanging chads? I hit the doldrums and don’t post as much as I used too. When I do I get a spike. I guess that’s me fingering myself for not posting often enough. ENJOY!
volcanocafe
/ January 10, 2012Thank you for a funny post.
As noted above you will get a rather nasty and long finger for today as being freshly pressed.
I hope I will get a finger one day on my own blog. I guess though that would require something on the order of 50K views for a day.
Also, it gave me a rather humbling moment about how many fine bloggers struggle. I started my own blog with a rather large following to beginn with, and had a 4K first day. In an odd sense of it wish I had gotten the experience of seeing it grow from just a few instead.
Good luck and hope you get few fingers, and a steady and high level instead.
/ January 10, 2012That is great, and I am the same way about the site stats. Definitely hooked, and wish I had more time to spend on the blog, but I also realize that it’s about quality and not quantity and I’m okay with that too. Great post 🙂
/ January 10, 2012My thoughts exactly! WordPress must be giving you the high five now instead of the finger, which it’s still giving me from time to time. =P
/ January 10, 2012Congrats! My type of blog. Easy reading and fun! Spot on about the stat checking also. I had to let my wife read it as she was getting on my case for a bit because of my constant checking. I said ‘See, I’m not the only one who is obsessed. Now comes the hard part, duplicating and maintaining this standard. You can do it! I’ll be watching you…(I meant as in following you) 🙂
/ January 10, 2012Well congrats on being Freshly Pressed! What a great reminder! I only started out my blog in June of last year and I’m started at 3 posts a week, going down to 1 per week (if I’m lucky). I’m not much of a writer, so I need to think of the FUN aspect of it. I wonder how many views you will have today!!
/ January 10, 2012Ha! No beginner blogger can say he is innocent! We are all guilty of this.
But i guess your traffic stats has shot up now your post got featured on wordpress.com homepage.
/ January 10, 20121. congrats on being FP… and yeah, what katemai said about only having the blog for 23 days!
2. I bet it will suck going from a gajillion views because of FP back to whatever low number you think is too low because you have now been FP, =)
I subscribed to you anyway. I like the idea of haikus leading into a blog post… I was always a big haiku writer as a kid. Filled one of those composition books with them when I was like… I dunno, 8?
/ January 10, 2012I can sympathize on the site stats. I would, however, prefer WordPress to give me the finger rather than a blank stare on any day of the week. (As in no bars even surfacing above the zero mark.) Congrats on your post becoming Freshly Pressed, it looks like you’ll be getting high-fives from stats for quite some time.
/ January 10, 2012Oh my gosh how I can relate to this. I am not a writer, but I love to write so I started my blog(s) back in November. I do this for the sheer fun and love of it. Stats mean nothing to me – RIGHT!!! I started checking stats several times a day. I never reached more than about 11 views, but hey, that was an awesome day. I was on top of the world. The next day, and the next ,and the next – 1-4 views. I suck, no one cares, what made me think this was even a fun, good idea.
I post on one blog EVERYDAY. I write about the different songs I wake up with in my head everyday. I don’t write much, but still, it is time consuming. So to pour my heart into something that no one appreciates in the slightest is becoming a bit depressing. Yesterday I climbed to 7 views. Oh I was soooo happy, ready to start writing again.
It is a pretty pathetic thing when my happiness is completely dependent upon finding a bar that day. ( unless of course it is an actual brick and mortar type bar, then I guess that might bring me some happiness and something to post about too)
Any way – congratulations to you.
jezerae
/ January 10, 2012I haven’t reached 100 views in a day yet, but I have definitively gotten the “finger” myself especially over the holidays.
/ January 10, 2012Agree with your post. This is my second blog and I began getting views upwards of 200 then sank back down to 50-60 and it made me less motivated. But you are dead on that its about writing and not the numbers. http://anabolicinstinct.wordpress.com/
/ January 10, 2012I’ll never look at my site stats the same way again – thanks for the laugh!
/ January 10, 2012I hope it makes you feel better to know that this particular blog post inspired me to leave my very first comment on wordpress. I, too, am new to the blogging world. And for the past 2 days, I keep checking my stats…darn numbers.
/ January 10, 2012I love everyone who blogs at Word Press! I wish I had the capacity to say thank you to each and every post, but my kids and husband are all a little tired of the excitement and I have to get back to working while at work. Me? I’m still on cloud nine…
The finger is now gone — all is a bumpy flatline (to borrow from one of you) save these two days of many views. I’ll call that a peace sign, signally I’m making peace with the stats and just enjoying my luck.
Thanks for making this fun!
will2write
/ January 10, 2012Sayig, “I can relate!” is a severe understatement. I am ever alert and constantly checking for more views. An addiction to knowing your wrting is worthy of someones time seems slightly outlandish, but it’s very real. I’ve yet to hit 100 hits on any single blog, but I’ve watched steadily increasing numbers and I grow an exuberant manner. Numbers started with a measely 7 hits for myself on my first day, but since then I’ve blossomed and now I watch as numbers climb to 25, 30, 35 and further. It is a great feeling to see you have a knack for something you’re so passionate of. Great post!
The Rusty Fork
/ January 10, 2012As a fellow new-blogger, I too have been watching the stats with longing. And mine too have been giving me the finger. Then I learned that we “contribute” to our own stats when we visit our own blogs.
So, it turns out: I am giving myself the finger.
Committing to blogging for a year could very well turn into a lonely adventure!
I do like your blog though..the design, the concept, the good writing.
DyingNote
/ January 10, 2012So true. Been through the same thing. While I still check on the stats, I don’t let the numbers bother me – I get the finger all the time especially since I post about once a week. Like you, I write because I love to and that’s kept me going for 4 months now.
keziahcarrie.com
/ January 10, 2012I thought my stats (quite similar to those you pictured) were just telling me I was Number One! 😉
ucanpreschool
/ January 10, 2012So simple yet so true. I am an obsessive stat watcher too, and also grumpy about not being Freshly Pressed after 80 posts since September. But you know, you are right, it is so silly. Before I blogged a whopping nobody read my writing, because I wasn’t writing. Now I am writer no matter how many people see it…I know it. Kudos to you and your sharp wit. One day you will look back on that finger and thank it.
/ January 10, 2012I too was addicted to my stats but now I’ve given them a rest. It was funny to read!
/ January 10, 2012Whoa. What a popular post for a new blogger! Congrats to you. Not gonna lie, it pretty much makes me jealous, but your blog is so relate-able to all of us, so naturally it’s a winner. (I am finding that Jesus (who I blog about) isn’t really that popular after all- at least not like giving people fingers! I guess I gotta remember that they killed Jesus.) … It’s so easy to get addicted to the stats and then we feel like it’s a drug that we can’t find a dealer for… God have mercy on us bloggers. Amen!
/ January 11, 2012Haha this gave me a great chuckle. I literally just created my blog minutes ago, I clicked on humor and this is the first thing I read. So if its of any help, your my first read blog and it made me laugh.
jseaford
/ January 11, 2012Yeah, not really sure what you’re complaining about here (I mean this light heartedly). I’m starting to think I’ve brought a plate of ham sandwiches to a Jewish wedding – my blog that is. Congrats, and what an irony.
jeb1111
/ January 11, 2012Considering I just gave you “Like” number 598, I don’t think you have to worry any more about an insufficient people viewing your blog! Ahaha!
But I think I suffer from the same addition to blog stats! I am checking my stats daily in order to see who and how many people have checked out my posts and page. It is really fascinating to see who views and likes your posts, and what you might have in common with that person when you get to visit their page.
Best of luck on boosting your stats! I hope your blog is no longer giving you “the finger…” And congrats on getting a “Freshly Pressed!”
/ January 11, 2012Congrats on being on ‘Freshly Pressed’ just two months into blogging!
My blog is giving me the finger too. 75 views on January 2, 2012. On an average I never get more than 10-15 views per day.
/ January 11, 2012I laughed myself silly reading this post (and got a little scared that perhaps you had crawled inside my head!) I also love haiku and look forward to reading more of yours. I’ve only posted one on my site but you are inspiring me to write more.
/ January 11, 2012Hilarious (spoken by a former WP finger checker). You’d better believe I still check but not before I pee or before I go to bed. It’s random checks and more to get rid of the spam in my ham folder. Good luck! Write for yourself and enough people will enjoy your humor! Of course, they’ll want to subscribe 🙂
/ January 11, 2012“my blog is giving me the finger” sounds like something a person with my twisted sense of reality would write/say, so i stopped by…lol. as i can see by reading some of the other comments, i am far from being the only one who lingers in the “who visited me, where are they from, what did they read” universe, which is why i believe WP is so successful, it offers us little toys that open up into the little online universes we have created for ourselves, where, regardless of personalities, beliefs, etc, we are all in the same cosmos, innocently just wanting to know who else is out there, in our own little ways. its as if the world around us stops, the insanity and craziness slows, and we step inside, without being lost in some ‘alice and wonderland’ world, being sucked in to a vortex of babble, aka the TV.
/ January 11, 2012Your stats should look like a butt now. Nice and curvy between the two peaks… Let us know, we’re all dying to see what you’re going to write about that!
Pissant Partisan
/ January 11, 2012Mine peaked on day one then fell into the sea like Atlantis, just making a few ripples here and there from then on ;), too many Chiefs and not enough Indians I guess!
So long as you aren’t one of those people who like every blog they come across to get more views you’re doing just fine as far as I’m concerned.
1stpeaksteve11
/ January 13, 2012My blog is kind of a niche blog so I have grown comfortable not seeing much traffic but I had to laugh because my discovery of the site stats feature has also been my undoing no matter how shallow the valleys are. I also get a chuckle reading the key words that were put into the search engines that directed someone to my site as well..
And your last statement Pissant Partisan is exactly how I feel. I love to read the “Freshly Pressed” blogs because you get such a wide array of topics and observations. Sometimes I feel like I should comment but sometimes I just read them and move on. Should I add something witty to a blog about collecting gum wrappers when I have no interest? Sometimes I also read something that sounds great and it leads me to further explore their blog only to discover they are the blogging equivalent to Kajagoogoo – a one hit wonder! No comment for you! I would rather let someone find my blog in a more natural manner.
/ January 11, 2012I bet your site stats are looking more like a staircase now! Congrats on being freshly pressed. Awesome and hilarious post!
/ January 11, 2012I can soooo relate! I’m new to blogging, too and have to resist the urge to define myself and my blog by my stats! I just keep telling myself that I just need to keep writing the messages on my heart and don’t pay much attention to the numbers. I just need to keep going forward and whatever happens happens.
Thanks for your encouragement!
Have a lovely day,
/ January 12, 2012Okay…so I’ve had this initial goal since I started this blog thing on December 31st to get 100 views in one day (Why? I don’t know). I got up this morning to IMMEDIATELY check my stats for yesterday…99. I think I want to shoot myself!!!! :0/
/ January 12, 2012Hey, I’ve just started a blog too. I liked reading yours so I’m telling you. I guess that’s the kind of thing bloggers do huh? And I’m going to have a go at your daily haiku thing; nice touch. And I’ll link to your blog from mine (if I can work out how to do that), and then maybe you’ll link to mine. I think that’s also how it works. Like I said, I’m kinda new to this.
/ January 13, 2012Well, looking at all these comments, you’ve cracked a market with a post about failing a blog. Irony can be beautiful sometimes.
It did make me feel a bit better about getting 76 views on my first day though so thank you.
All in all, just keep putting posts out there, remain frequent and you’ll eventually get popular. It’s a waiting game and I, personally, love it.
Liked and Followed. The post tells me you’re an interesting, intelligent person.
/ January 13, 2012Too funny!
I’ve had the same experience – albeit a shorter finger! Which means that my readership is less than enthusiastic even on my so-called good days! smh ….
Oh well, still pressing on and praying that I’m creating content that more folks will want to read one day. Until then, I’ll work on keeping and being thankful for my precious few! 🙂
Congrats on being freshly pressed! (Another concept I’m not sure I understand but apparently everyone else does so I’m going with it!) 🙂
/ January 13, 2012Lol, too funny! Great writing, can definitely sympathize!
/ January 14, 2012I think when you enter the blogging world your insecurities are magnified. We are all on here because we believe we are good writers, well, what if most of the world thinks you are a terrible writer? what then, how do you come to terms with your talentlessness? I started blogging January 3rd… I have two site views and one follower (myself). So, I think it is safe to say that my blog must be giving me TWO GIANT MIDDLE FINGERS. Congratulations and hopefully you can give me a little advice on how to garner viewership.
Family Haikus
/ January 14, 2012Hi. Luck has been huge for me… Before that i shared blight links for each posting on Facebook and twitter. That got me started with a few reads each post… Then we are back at lack, i’m afraid…
/ January 14, 2012There’s no need to worry about your current lull in action. Not everything you write is gonna be a smashing success. Keep doing what you love! You’ll get where you need to be!
Pissant Partisan
/ January 14, 2012theevelynroseeffect,
I checked out your blog and I think your problem may be because you haven’t tagged any of your posts, so they wont be on the global tag listings so no-one (by no-one I mean casual browsers) will be able to find them. Unless of course I’m just being a total wordpress n00b and I’ve missed something big.
theevelynroseeffect
/ January 14, 2012Pissant Partisan, I think you are absolutely right. I am a novice. Actually, if there is anything lower than a novice I would fall under that category. Family haiku’s post gave the inspiration to take a closer look at my page design as well as how efficiently I utilize the tools wordpress provides. Hopefully, by the end of 2012 I’ll have at least mastered the tag option… we’ll see
/ January 15, 2012Hahaha…Since I started mine on December 21st, my blog has given me a few middle fingers! Some days I get 10 views, some days I get 90. It is just hit and miss, really. But, I try not to worry too much about my following, since I am so new… The friend that prompted me to do this blog was correct. It takes a long while to develop a real following. But, just be persistent. It will happen (I have this faith about my blog – yours will follow suit as well. 🙂 ). Anyway, good luck with yours, and I intend to read more when I have more time.
/ January 15, 2012Wow, I just started a new blog. I can’t imagine getting the kind of response you have had. I am really impressed. I hope that you enjoy the writing aspect as much as the “applause”. I really enjoyed this article. Nice blog. Keep writing and enjoy the process along the way.
/ January 15, 2012Too funny! I think my blog is giving me a fist. Like it’s going to punch me in the face if I don’t get it noticed soon. Oh well, it’s a fight and I’m in it to win it.
Bah-Bam! My Musings
/ January 15, 2012Lol! It seems as if there are a number of new bloggers out there this year. I am a “new” return blogger. I used to blog on myspace back in 2003, but now that the myspace hype is over, and I am just starting my author career, it is timee to settle down & blog seriously.
Those pesky site stats are quite addicting 🙂 but it can be an emotional boost. Consider me a new follower 🙂
/ January 15, 2012I am also relatively new to the blogging world and I am absolutely obsessed with site stats. I literally check them at least five times a day. There is no greater thrill than watching the numbers climb higher and higher.
/ January 16, 2012I think your blog is giving ME the finger, because I’ve never seen stats like that. Either I’m doing something wrong or my writing is terrible (don’t answer that).
Take the good days buddy!
Anyway, you’re blog is a good read. I’ll keep returning. Now back to staring at my own stats. Or perhaps I’ll watch the grass grow instead.
/ January 16, 2012I read this post and then went and created my own middle finger blog post!!!!
You inspired me with your honesty!!! I even linked to you on my “People That Inspire Me” page because, well, you did inspire me.
I had my middle finger day yesterday with almost 700 views of my Blog “Grim Reaper Girl” in one day. Thank you for being a part of encouraging me to brave and daring, speak from my heart & my own life, to be willing to be vulnerable. I never expected it would mean my Blog would give me the middle finger too! LOL! But I love it!!!!!!!!
Let’s follow each other’s journeys…turn our towers into skylines, whadya say?! =)
/ January 16, 2012I started my blog roughly the same time you did, and had exactly the same experience. Every time I publish a new post, I sit and stare at the site stats. And I refer to my blog (to myself) as The Narcissism Project. 🙂
/ January 17, 2012I think all bloggers can identify with this! Hilarious! 🙂
/ January 19, 2012I can completely understand the word press addiction! I have no doubt that your views have gone way up! But alas, will this be cause for word press giving you the finger again? Good luck to you, I wish you many views, and well read posts!
/ January 19, 2012Very amusing I started 9th Jan and have no idea wtf I am doing but I found the stats pretty quickly and have been checking it several times a day which is a good thing as it is the only way my stats are improving. Your blog gave me a laugh. So will read your blogs and hopefully figure out a little more about this wonderful alternate universe.
/ January 22, 2012Ha! I thought I was the only one obsessed with Site Stats, as well! It gets sort of like Facebook or Twitter sometimes, when you start basing on the number of views (or friends, followers, etc) on your popularity. But then you remember not to let your head get to you and remember that you were here in the first place: to write. Wonderful post, and congrats for being pressed!
